Who are we?
Sinkable is a newly started student project at FIA Robotics, founded by a group of mechanical engineering master’s students. Our goal is to design and build an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) from scratch: a robot that can navigate, sense and make its own decisions below the surface, where GPS and radio communication are limited.
Right now our main focus is learning. We want to understand what it really takes to build a working underwater vehicle, from keeping the electronics dry to making it find its way on its own. By documenting what we learn and building solid, reusable systems, we want to lay a stable foundation that future members can build on.
In the long run, we aim to take Sinkable to an international student competition, such as the TAC Challenge in Norway or RoboSub in the USA. These competitions give teams realistic underwater tasks like navigation, object detection and docking, and reward autonomous solutions.
Want to apply or visit us?
We’re looking for motivated engineering students to help us make this project happen. We don’t have fixed teams as we are currently a team of three, but the key areas we work in are mechanics, electronics, firmware and software, so there’s room for you whatever your background may be.
If you’re interested in joining, fill out our application form or come visit us in the lab. We don’t have set lab hours, so contact us and we’ll let you know when we’re meeting next.
